“In old Irish literature we find the story of Bláithíne of Brí Léith, daughter of King Midir, who was stolen away by the warlock Cú Roí to be his Queen. She fell in love with the legendary warrior Cú Chulainn, and with him she planned the murder of her husband. In this painting we see the young princess twinning St John’s Wort around her fingers, a form of fortune telling. The red sap is an omen of love to come – but also resembles blood on her hands.
